Speaking in :p
My reaction when I first started “Speaking in Tongues” I was really disappointed in it because I thought that it was going to be about some goodie tou-shoe (or however you spell that) girl who went to church and I thought that it was going to talk about how boring church life was and how she had to read the bible and all that boring stuff. But I was really taken aback when I got into the story and found out who her mom was. Then when she ran away and met Dezi I was like dang things are getting interesting. So I guess you cant judge a book by its cover.

SH-V
After finally finishing slaughter house five I was relived. Personally I didn’t like it, I had no idea why the author would skip ahead and back through time every paragraph to me it was annoying and confusing. I think that I would agree with the author that this book was a failure. Another thing that bothered me by this awful book was how he went to that alien planet, I could see the whole being abducted thing as being a metaphor for something. However bad this book may have been I did like one thing about it. The part I liked about it was how Kurt Vonnegut made death present everywhere this made me think of how horrible it would be to have to fight in a war. Also I liked how he told his war buddy’s wife, Marry how he would no portray war as some heroic and glorious game. I think that he did a great job of making war seem depressing since every one who was around Billy die.

A Few Questions
Something that I don’t understand is why we are reading such stories as The Metamorphosis and Slaughter House Five if the authors themselves said they are crap. After reading Metamorphosis I was confident in the decision that Kafka had made as to call his work worthless because that’s what I thought about it. I don’t really seen the meaning in close reading these text’s if the authors themselves didn’t have anything to hide in them. I understand close reading is a good skill to have and all, but I think that it should be used in a text that has meaning not a horribly put together work such as the Metamorphosis.
Another thing that I have been wondering, which has completely nothing to do with literature is why do all girl’s blogs look all the same, the same font, same text and for the most part same color scheme?

Commentary on Absurdism
After we listened to that ridiculous so called poem in class with the men standing around in a circle making awkward noises I just thought, what is poetry really? So I looked the definition up on the internet and went through the various meanings of it only to discover that poetry could be pretty much anything you want it to be. By this I mean that if you think something is poetry then it is and if you don’t think it is then it isn’t. So pretty much I interpreted this to be, as long a something has a meaning to you then it can be poetry but if it means nothing to you then since it has no meaning it wouldn’t be poetry it would just be a random jumbling of words or noises. I think that this is a very controversial topic and can be interpreted in various ways. Some might argue and say that a random jumbling of words or noises can be poetry, but if they do they have to have some reason behind it, therefore having meaning to them and making it poetry.

Interpreting Metamorphosis
After I had read the first chapter in Metamorphosis I was completely lost. I had no clue that Gregory turned into a beetle, I just thought that he was having a lot of trouble waking up in the morning because it described what I feel like every day when I wake up for school.
When I found out that Gregory in fact, did turn into a beetle I thought to myself “…That would explain a lot”. Looking back on what I thought before I knew that Gregory turned into a beetle I now think that this whole beetle deal might be a huge metaphor for something else. As we learned in this class when you read something closely it can have almost infant amounts of meanings and interpretations.
My view on this story might be out there, but I think that turning into a beetle is another way of saying how hard it is to get out of bed in the morning.

While I was drifting off in class I thought back to what Mr. Kunkle had told us about some people who thought Mr. Rogers was corrupting children and it was bad for them to watch because he tells everyone that they are special, when really they are not. This was interesting to hear because when you think about it, it is very true. I can see where these people are coming from because when a child hears this they might think that the world revolves around them.
